Making the Band

Everybody dreams of being a rock star [if not everyone, a lot of people do]. Armed with our air guitars and lip-syncing skills, we aspirants often have to content ourselves with rocking out in our bedrooms, our audience: ourselves, in the mirror; strangers on YouTube; stuffed toys; pets; und so weiter.

But yeah, I know that I don’t have a future in rock-starring. For one thing, the instrument I play used to play is the classical violin. Now, I know that the violin is getting more and more popular in rock music, but honestly, there aren’t many song possibilities for the instrument out there.

So, instead of being the rock star, let’s settle on the next best thing… I could always manage a band. Manufacture one, even.

In fact, I’ve already made up my mind on who’s going to be in my brand new rock band. Sure, I’ll have to pull them out of their current careers, but after showing them my oh-so-experienced managerial skills, how can they resist?

Anyway, here they are. My new rock band, who they are, and why I chose them. Hover over the links so you can get a little background on each of my money machines talents.

First, let’s start with the heart of the band: No Doubt’s Adrian Young on drums.

• Why? It’s all personality, baby. He’s just so much fun… wearing hardly anything in their videos… not to mention the outrageous hairstyles. And when he plays, he’s just so into it; it’s so much fun watching him.
• Audition material: hover over here to watch.
• Who almost made it, and why they didn’t:
  • Actually, I didn’t have anyone else in mind. I wanted The Naked Guy Adrian, and no-one else.

Next, we have the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea on bass guitar.

• Why him? Because he’s Flea. Come on, people!
• Audition material: hover over here to watch.
• Who almost made it, and why they didn’t:
  • Tony Kanal – I couldn’t have two people from No Doubt in my all-new-super-original-manufactured band! And besides, Flea is Flea.

And on lead guitar, we have Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen.

• Why? Yes, I know he’s pretty old, but man, he’s so good! And he wears really cute outfits! And his guitars are legendary! Rick Nielsen is legendary! All hail Rick!

• Who almost made it, and why they didn’t:
  • Justin Hawkins from The Darkness – he’s front man material, I can’t turn him into a… back man. It just wouldn’t work.

And to front my band, I have chosen the very wonderful KT Tunstall.

• Why? I wanted a female in the band. Actually, I wanted a female on lead guitars, but do you know how impossible it is to find a female guitarist?! Then I remembered KT Tunstall, who not only plays the guitar, but sings and does her own percussions sometimes as well. She doesn’t need a band, actually, because she’s so great on her own, but I think it would be cool hearing her perform other genres. I don’t like a lot of bands fronted by women, but if all bands were fronted by the likes of KT Tunstall, my preferences would most likely change.

• Who almost made it, and why they didn’t:
  • Mika – I decided against choosing him because I can’t imagine the musicians I picked performing with him. Unless they have a really Queen-esqe sound. But yeah, Mika’s more of a solo artist.
  • Gregg Alexander – I couldn’t find any decent photos of him. Haha. And like I said, I wanted a female in the group, so even if I did find any photos, I would have replaced him with Miss Tunstall anyway.

As you might have noticed, there is an extra someone in the band. I put Takeshi Kaneshiro in there… because I can. And besides, he can sing. And when he’s not singing, he can do some sort of interpretative dance in the back. Or shake a tambourine/maracas/whatever. Or I could make him a [very well-paid] roadie – so he can do some heavy lifting while I watch – hee hee. He’s just so pretty, and the long tiring tours would be so much more worthwhile with him along. Plus, think of all the tabloid exposure me and him would get. I mean, we make a great couple. We could even have our own reality show. Like Victoria and David Beckham. Only Asian. And maybe just a little weirder. [Those are Superstix in my mouth by the way.]
